  • Retake Test Policy – I’ve always had students retake tests, but I think it is important for students to do their best the first time they take a test. So, some school years, I find myself modifying my policy. This year, I decided to speak with students to hear their opinions, which helped me shape the policy this year. Please read the criteria below as students must meet all requirements to retake a test. Please note that I reserve the right to modify the policy at any time.
    • Parent Signature – Any student may retake a test. However, students who earned a D or F on the original test, must have a parent signature on their test. The signed test must be submitted by the day of the retake test.
    • Reteaching – Students will be retaught the skills they did not attain. Students should be attentive, take notes, and participate during the lessons.
    • Test Corrections – Students must complete a test correction form that requires them to analyze their incorrect answers, which should prevent them from making the same mistakes. Since some tests are administered online via Quizizz, students will have to use the link to the assessment in Google Classroom to access the questions and their answer choices.
    • Additional Assignments – Students will have to complete all assignments with 100% accuracy in an effort to develop the skills. The assignments will be in Prodigy. I thought I was going to be able to use IXL; however, the contract with IXL ends on 09/30/23. As of today, 3 of my 4 classes have been taught how to access their Prodigy account and classes. I set up the assignments for students to be able to complete their Prodigy assignments at home. Currently, each skill will have 3 problems. All assignments combined will take less than 1 hour to complete; however, students will be given multiple days to complete them.
    • Limited Retakes – Students will only be allowed to retake each test one time. Students will not be allowed to retake a test multiple times; there is only one opportunity. If the student does the additional assignments with integrity, as well as pay attention to the reteaching of the skills, then their test grade should improve.
    • Final Score – If the retake score is greater than the original score, then the average of the original score and the retake score will be entered into Aspen. The retake score will not erase the original. Students actually thought this was fair. If the original score is greater than the retake score, then the original score will be entered into Aspen.
  • Small Group Instruction – This is where I find my most joy in teaching, because every student can experience success. Now, that I have Star 360 data, I have grouped students into ability groups that will change throughout the school year. It is important to note that small group instruction is designed to close the gap that might exist between students’ ability and grade levels. It is also designed to challenge high-achieving students to advance in mathematics. Students must self-regulate when I am meeting with groups, the remaining students must complete their independent tasks, work on explore team activities, and practice retake test activities. It is imperative that students stay on task, so that, everyone can grow.
